Holistic Health Educational Seminars...
Advising and Guiding
A Holistic Health Practitioner is an
adviser and guide, providing information and motivation to individuals who seek
to improve their general health and enhance their well-being. To help you along
this path we offer the following sessions designed to increase your own personal
knowledge and understanding of holistic health and lifestyle issues.
New!! We are pleased to offer
group educational seminars in the comfort of your home, office, church or
wherever your group normally meets in the metro Washington, D.C. area. All group
sessions are 75 minutes in length and require at least five participants. The
cost is $35 per person regardless of the topic.
Basic Nutrition
(60 minutes)
Carbs are bad;
no, fat is bad; sugar is to blame. What’s a person to believe? In this
session we will put common nutritional myths to rest and give you the
information you need to make smart food choices for you and your family. You
will learn the basics about fats, carbohydrates, and protein; what constitutes a
healthy diet; foods that enhance immunity; key differences between processed and
organic food; the importance of phytochemicals and antioxidants, powerful
cancer-fighters found in certain foods; and potential hazards in the food
supply.
Understanding
Supplements (60 minutes)
Our bodies require
vitamins and minerals to carry out important functions. Supplementing your diet with these critical nutrients is becoming
more important as soil is gradually depleted of them and we eat more processed,
and less nutritious, foods. This session discusses in detail the most important
vitamins and minerals, fiber and phytochemicals that we need to be healthy; what
each one does for health; and recommended doses of each.
Healthy Living
(60 minutes)
If you’re feeling
frazzled, pulled in too many directions and just plain lacking the time to make
healthy living decisions, then this session is for you. In it we will talk about
the components of a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, keeping your immune
system strong, managing your time for optimum health, and reducing stress. We
will devise personal strategies to have you feeling more relaxed, balanced and
healthier.
The
Mind-Body-Spirit Connection in Health (45 minutes)
An old wives’ tale
says that stress can lead to stomach upset and skin disorders, such as hives. In
fact, recent scientific studies have demonstrated that there is a link between
emotions and certain physiological states. We will explore these links and the
implications they have on emotional and physical well-being. We will also talk
about the effects of stress and strategies to mitigate its harmful effects and
elevate your spirit.
Breath Work and
Meditation (30 minutes)
Breathing is of
course central to life. So it may be surprising to hear that many people do not
breathe correctly. Learn to maximize the breath to enhance your health and calm
your nerves. A type of meditation focuses on the breath. Studies have
consistently shown people who meditate enjoy better than average health and well-being.
Sessions will be divided into breathing exercises and meditation.
Take a Break:
Relax, Sleep and Have Some Fun (30 minutes)
We know that
emotions can influence our health for better or worse. It is easy to get caught
up in the daily grind, with a lot of stress, sleeping problems and not a lot of
laughter or fun. Here we will talk about ways in which you can minimize your
stress, maximize your sleep and develop fun lifestyle habits to promote health
and well-being.
Leading an
Active Lifestyle (45 minutes)
Keeping fit is
critical to your health. Studies show that Americans are not getting enough
exercise and this is leading to illness. Right now we are witnessing an explosion of diabetes in
the United States, particularly in children. Obesity, which is linked to diabetes,
also can contribute to other illness, including cardiovascular disease. Both can
be controlled with exercise. We will discuss the benefits of aerobic exercise, flexibility, balance
and strength training and will devise a realistic program to get you moving.
Meal Preparation
and Considerations (30 minutes)
Eating right is
more than knowing what to eat and what to avoid. It is also a question of time
management, having good recipes at your fingertips and proper cleanliness. In
this session you will learn a few important short cuts that will allow you to
prepare delicious, healthful meals quickly and without a lot of hassle. We will
also discuss the pros and cons of certain types of cookware, microwave ovens,
cutting boards and maintaining a clean cooking environment.
1, 2, 3—Let’s
Shop! (30 minutes)
Achieving optimum
health is easier if you know your way around the grocery store. In this session
you will learn to read and interpret food labels—both the packaging and the
nutrition label—so that you can make smart choices about what products to buy.
We will also discuss buying household cleaning supplies and other items commonly
found in your supermarket. Alternatives to shopping at your local grocery store
in order to maximize your healthy lifestyle also will be discussed.
Common Herbal
Remedies (45 minutes)
A report by the
Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that 100,000 deaths in
U.S. hospitals were directly attributable to the proper doses of
pharmaceutical drugs. Herbs contain families of compounds that in some cases can
promote healing without the toxic effects of conventional drugs. In this session
we discuss common herbal remedies for common ailments, such as peppermint (for
your stomach), garlic (to lower blood pressure and cholesterol), ginger (for
nausea) gingko (for blood circulation), ginseng (to increase energy) and more!
Aromatherapy at
Home (30 minutes)
Essential oils are
extracted from certain flowers, grasses, roots, leaves and trees. Some of these
oils have medicinal properties and are used in prescription drugs; others
provide aroma or are used as flavoring in cooking. In this session you will learn about the
10 most common essential oils and their uses, including lavender, tea tree,
chamomile, eucalyptus, thyme, clove and lemon. We will also discuss other uses
for these oils, such as preparing lotions and body oils, keeping insects away,
cleaning the kitchen or bath and alleviating common ailments.
An Overview of
Holistic Therapies (60 minutes)
Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM) is based on the idea of energy circulating through meridians, or
channels, in the body. Disease, according to TCM, is the result of an imbalance
in the energy flow in the body. Acupuncture is the most widely-known TCM
treatment. We will discuss this, as well as other popular alternative therapies
including Ayurveda, the Indian science of healthy living; energy medicine;
yoga; massage therapy and homeopathy.
